I enjoy being creative in my personal time and love getting so caught up in whatever I’m doing that I lose track of time. That said, I also love checking off things on my to-do list for work.
If you could see inside my brain at one moment in time, you would probably see something like a search engine and 100 different pages pulled up on a computer. My mind seems to be going all the time – and in different directions. While that is good for certain applications, it’s not always a positive thing when trying to be creative and productive.
For example, there are times I need sit down to write but I have so many other things going through my mind that I become overwhelmed. At those times, I need to block everything out, focus, and force myself to be creative. In fact, it works best if I block time on my calendar in advance.
So while it may seem counterintuitive to schedule time or force yourself to be creative, it may be necessary. At the end of the process, you may find you’ve accomplished more then you thought you were going to.
